Characters and where to start?

That sinking feeling when you realise that you committed to writing a story for an anthology and that means working out a pair of new characters, and a story although this anthology has a theme …

Of course, I don’t make things easy for myself, because I also run the risk of falling into the research black hole, one of the joys, for me, of being neurodivergent.

So, what does this process look like? Where do I start? There is a start, isn’t there? Of course, there is!

I am a very visual person when it comes to writing. I need to find the right sort of face which will act as inspiration for my new story. Also, I need to find the right creature that works with the anthology theme. The theme is that ‘even villains deserve love’. I could have made it easy for myself. Casimir, the main man of Cysgodion, definitely filled the role of a villain as far as the characters of “Beta” were concerned. But, by “Cysgodion” and “Merysekhmet”, he seems to have redeemed himself.

Not Casimir then.

The one creature I have yet to include in my stories is the vampire, hence the picture of a vampire bat. But … there is a similar problem to people assuming that all sexy romance must be like FSOG. There are series like The Originals. There are books and movies like Twilight. Then we have Hotel Transylvania and characters saying “Blah, blah blah!”. Vampires have been done to death. So the first thing I had to irk out was how did my vampires differ? Was I going to let someone else choose the definition?

Where would be the fun in that?

But first things first, I needed a face, or rather faces. It would be a M/F romance, as I don’t feel confident enough to diverge from that yet.

My story, my rules. I may well have to include that as a note at the start of the story, because otherwise, I am sure readers might be a bit cross that I didn’t follow ‘official’ lore. I needed my characters to be out and about, so the traditional avoidance of sunlight wouldn’t work.

Lily turnout out to be a high school History teacher. My male character was law enforcement, but in the vampire parallel to the FBI. I haven’t found a face for him, so whilst I have an idea of his name and lineage, I really need that face.

So, as they used to say … “Stay tuned …”.

Bran Cadwgan is one of two Betas of the Cwn Annwn. He believed he would never be granted a Mate by the Goddess as penance for past mistakes, but discovers that he was wrong. Will he succeed in proving to both her family and his Mate that he is worthy of her sharing his life?

Alix Gosselin is the only daughter of the Gosselin Alpha and his mate. She was the “Gosselin Princess” growing up in an abusive home, until she fled first to attend boarding school and then for a career in law enforcement. Her parents had proven that the myth of a mate who would love and treasure you above all else was just that, a myth. Then, she encountered a biker whilst investigating a series of female disappearances in a suspected sex-trafficking ring. Her life would never be the same again. Alix wants to believe the story she is told by her biker, but she knows her father will not let her ‘throw herself away’ on a ‘mere biker’.

Bran and Alix, both have preconceptions to overcome. Both of them will be faced with challenges. Will the growing bond between them be sufficient? Based on the legend of the Welsh Cwn Annwn, and incorporating Jo’s love of myth and legend, Beta introduces a cast of Cwn Annwn, wolf shifter and human characters, weaving romance with the contemporary world. Dare you walk in our world?

Coming to a bookstore in 2023

This is just a little bit exciting for me. Who am I kidding? It is a lot-a-bit exciting. After much consideration, I have come up with the list of books which I aim to publish over the course of 2023, roughly at the rate of one every quarter. Would you like to know more?

Am Byth will fill in the gap between Cysgodion and Merysekhmet, with the story of how Casimir develops his plan to bring the legacy of his sire to an end. But he has enemies, not least of whom is Lamashtu, the demoness unable to comprehend why this mere shifter has turned on her. For this, he will suffer and those close to him will pay. What will this mean to those close to him: his Pack Beta, Rosa and his Mate, Daniela Echeverria.

Daimonas follows on from the story of Fane, the Alpha of the Anghelescu Hellhounds. Someone is targeting Fane’s pack in a way that is all too personal. First he is accused of the deaths of two undercover cops, and Alix has to use her ingenuity to have additional forensics done in an attempt to prove his innocence. This results in a meeting between the forensic scientist, Caroline, and the chief mechanic of the Chain & Sprocket workshop, Drahomir Anghelescu. Now that the pack is free of Lamashtu, Fane and Stefania have realised that they are Mates, freeing the rest of the pack to discover their own partners. When Drax realises that he and Caroline share a bond, he is faced with how he will let the slender, but isolated forensics specialist into his world, without endangering her by exposure to the Pack’s enemies.

Heliwr picks up the story of a series favourite, Detective Jake Petersen, but with a twist. When he agrees to help Alix over a spike in smuggling into the New York Ports, little does he realise that the culprit will also prove to be his Mate. This story will be co -written with Bethan Thomas, who wrote the part of Stefania in Fane.

Tan A Daear is the story of Alex Vasilev, elder brother of Sergei from Medved. After being involved in a helicopter crash, Alex wakes to find himself in a hospital room with a broken leg. The head Physiotherapist has been tasked to ensure he doesn’t lose muscle tone, but there is more to her than meets the eye. Jadzia doesn’t realise everything that she can do, other than knowing that she can help the unusual patients under her care heal faster. She certainly doesn’t realise how close to danger she is. Will she accept Alex’s help?

Family

Over the New Year, I have been spending some time with my parents, both of whom have dementia. They remember family members but short term memory is not good. It brought to mind the importance that family play in our stories, as we discover more about them and through them about ourselves.

When I was planning the first story in my series, I wanted Gavril’s history to begin with the Tudor age, even though he would have the appearance of a male in his early thirties. Other details had to be adjusted to fit, such as his daughter appearing to be in her 20s by World War 2 but in reality being in her 80s.

So many things would have happened in the course of his lifetime. One of my more recent series, “Daughters of the Ddraig”, features a reimagined Ddraig Goch of Wales. Like Gavril, he looks younger than his true age. Over the years, he has seen his family grow and change. Would a school seem different if it was known that actual dragons were amongst the students?

This is only a short post, as I have to hit the road soon. I will close by saying that, I hope you will make time to find out more about your family before it is too late. Before dementia robs you of your past. Good or bad, it is still worth knowing and understanding.

Shapeshifting: myth, dream or reality

In my novels, there are shapeshifters, whose forms are inspired by legend. Gavril, the leader of my Cwn Annwn, can adopt a human form, a wolf or his ‘true’ form of a white spectral hound. Fane is the leader of my Hellhound Pack. Casimir, a wolf shifter, leads a pack of mixed shifters. By why are they my main characters?

My first recollection of enjoying reading was a book of Greek myths, never mind that I was in my teens before I knew the correct pronunciation of some of those Greek names. But, I have always been fascinated by the ‘what if’ of a story. What if Theseus hadn’t forgotten to change the sail to a white sail? What if Achilles’ mother had remembered to dip his heel into the Styx?

Along that same vein, as my reading of myths expanded, I wondered what would be the result if some of those myths still existed in this world, but by necessity hid themselves from us?

Who hasn’t experienced that deja vu that stops them from crossing a road, for example? What if that ‘feeling’ was a Cwn Annwn pulling you back? They can’t tell us they were there, because otherwise how could they harvest souls in these days. After all, modern life is a world of law and order … allegedly.

Hellhound: dark fur, red eyes, howling to the full moon

Casimir’s wolf form as a black wolf

Thus began the Diaries of the Cwn Annwn. Alpha tells the story of Gavril and his Mate Aaleahya. In Beta, you will meet Bran and Owain, the Betas of the Cwn Annwn and the two females who become their Mates. Fane is the story of the Anghelescu Hellhounds, and what makes Fane anything but a ‘typical’ Hellhound.

Furlough is an opportunity

Apologies if that comes across as toxic positivity. As someone who has encountered mental health issues, nothing riles me more than the toxic negativity set, or those who want to close their eyes to the world around them. Why have chocolate ganache as a first image? I used to have a real hang-up over making ganache properly. I have used the time to work it out.

Cooking: Ganache

COVID-19 has changed both the world and our own personal spheres. At the moment, I am on furlough from my retail job as a Store Manager in The Works. That is likely to be the case until ‘Easter’, although whether than means before Easter, the beginning of April, the end of the school holidays? Who knows? Everyone says we can learn lessons from what is happening, and some have. As the events of the past few days in the American Capitol have demonstrated, some can’t and won’t learn about how the world has changed.

Our Prime Minister seems to be doing his best to ensure that the UK is cut off from Europe, a situation with which I do not agree. In the course of my working life, I have travelled to most European conference centres, and ventured out of the hotel as well. The exchange of information at international conferences is a vital part of development, or without it, we will stagnate. I worked for companies who imported their products from Europe and further afield. In the cost-cutting world of the National Health Service (NHS), the prices of those products as a result of being made abroad were key. But, who will pay when those prices have to rise due to the additional paperwork? I can’t see companies like my last employer being able to swallow that price increase.

Cooking: Vegan Stir Fry

Then again, the pandemic has brought other opportunities. Looking as someone who has been out of medical sales, but with a 20 year career behind me, I have seen the NHS change. Reduced face to face contact. Scanning job advertisements, some companies view it as an ‘opportunity’ to speak to more customers. Does that take into account that those customers are, to use the vernacular, up to their eyeballs in dealing with the pandemic? I used to work with Anaesthetists and ICU teams, those same teams at the heart of the pandemic. As the world changes, so must we.

So opportunity? Reconnecting with people. I have been talking to my old role-playing writer friends, and enjoying the flow of ideas that comes from that. Cakes? Not so much because my husband really needs to lose weight. Cookery? Yes, because I have time now to plan meals, to cook those dishes which are more healthy but take time. Working where I have been has given me a huge library of cook books. Planning. I have seen people who say there is no point in planning at the moment. But, your life is in your hands. Outline your dreams, plan your ideal holiday. If you don’t examine the ‘what if’ , then you will stagnate.

Don’t try for everything at once. That was the mistake that I made in the last extended lockdown. Pick and choose what you want to do. I have donated those craft items I bought which I won’t use, to focus on my art, writing and cookery. And yeah, that home office of mine is in for a shake-up, now that I know I will be off work until Easter … unless I find another job. Who knows? Whether you take baby steps or stride off into the wide blue yonder will be your choice. There is nothing wrong with baby steps if that is what it takes. Sales can be a game of patience. The trick is knowing when to move.

Writing for the Market?

I planned this week’s blog whilst at work with the day job. Yes, one day, I would love to be a full-time professional writer, but that day is not now. Footfall is down in our store, as it is in many retail sectors, but each and every customer is valued. But, I will be honest. I wish there were more of them wanting to spend money.

Okay. Pity party over. The Goddess helps those who help themselves. What delights do I have for you today? Food-wise, we have some modified snacks, the sort that start off as a recipe book idea and morph to include my personal touch. On the writing front, we have something about research and how to be sure that you are using a good quality source, along with a consideration of the destination for your writing. Finally, we have an idea for dealing with anxiety.

Writing for the Market

If you have gone down the route of writing your story first, and then attempting to publish it, you will encounter the need to enter seven or so keywords. By then you will have some idea of whether you are writing romance or crime or murder-mystery etc. There are numerous publications which give guidance on choosing keywords, so let’s take a step back. At which market are you aiming your book? Romance, which is well known to be the most crowded marketplace of all? It’s crowded for a reason. Romance, and sex, sells. Or is your love for post-apocalyptic sci-fi? You don’t see many books on the front tables of Waterstones, but it is what you enjoy writing. Crowded marketplace but one which sells, or your passion which isn’t so popular. Then again, right now, with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, there are a a lot of books on that topic. Do you target the currently popular subject? Which market is going to sell or are you not writing to make money? Decisions, decisions. But it is one you must make. Do you want to go for a small market, so that you can learn the ropes, or jump straight in?

Source Material

I recall reading a book where it is was patently obvious that the author had not bothered to do her research. According to the story, set in my home counties of East Anglia, the British still drank ‘ale’, used ‘pound notes’ and we wore pants, which we do, but under trousers. So, how do you know you are looking at good quality source material?

I will share the advice given to me by my former A-level History teacher. Primary sources are good, but may not be balanced. For example, Tacitus wrote about the Roman attack on Anglesey. But he was related to the Emperor and thus, wanted the attack to favour him. Secondary sources, where events are related by someone not present, may also suffer from bias. So, one good indicator is the quality of the references.

This is a book I was using as background information of what as happening in England during the war, as a possible short story of an existing character. This is the first page of the references:

What made a difference for me was that there were links to the National Archive. That told me that the author had checked at the place were records were kept of the individuals examined in the book. This made it a good source. However, good sources do not have to be in books. They can be online also, not least because a lot of scientific information is available as free access online.

Mental Health Exercise

We have five senses, and when an anxiety attack hits, it seems as if all of them fire at once, overloading us with information. This exercise is aimed at helping to regain focus by concentrating on one sense: touch.

Pick an item you are wearing, for example, your watch. Close your eyes so that you block out sight. Use touch to ‘see’ around your watch: the shape of the face, whether there is a winding button, what sort of strap does it have. Take your time. As you move around your watch, breathe in and breathe out, slowing your breath to a count of five for each inhalation and exhalation. If you feel the need to explore another item, then do so.

A Little Snack

Finally, I really quick little twist to boring, unsalted nuts. Take 200g of nuts: peanuts, blanched almonds or cashews are good. Mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of maple syrup and one teaspoon of hot sauce. I used Wiltshire Farm’s Sweet Chili Sauce, because I am a wimp. Toss the nuts in the mix, and sprinkle salt to taste. Not too much or you lose the contrast between spicy and sweet. Bake for around 20 minutes at 180 degrees centigrade, until they are a light, caramel colour. If they are ‘burnt’, they may be still edible.

That’s all folks!

Mad As A March Hare

Maybe mad is the wrong word, which is a bit rich coming from an author. What do I have for you this month?

RECIPE OF THE WEEK/MONTH/SINCE THE LAST BLOG

Smoked Salmon Risotto with Broccoli and Bacon

  1. Cut the bacon rashers into chunks and fry until crispy. This is to leave a reasonable amount of bacon fat in the pan.
  2. Fry the onion and garlic in the bacon grease until lightly browned.
  3. Add the risotto rice and stir so that it mixes well with the browned onion and garlic.
  4. Dribble in the stock (1 cube to one pint of boiling water).
  5. When the rice is nearly cooked, add the broccoli. Don’t add it too soon or it will overcook.
  6. Tear the salmon into strips and add it to the pan.
  7. Throw the bacon in and stir.

You will need approx 2 pints of water for enough risotto rice for four people.

MENTAL HEALTH TIPS

This is a quick point, but it was something on which I have pondered. “Take a break.” or some variation thereof. Makes it sound so easy only it is anything but easy.

So, my tip is this: find a minute and close your eyes. Imagine a place that brings you pleasure and that could be a bar, a forest, the seaside. Only you know that place. Stay there for a minute, and then return. When you need to do so, return to that place.

WRITING TIPS AND TECHNIQUES

The point here is from all those who say in a review, “This would be good after editing.” I have encountered this comment twice recently. The first was from … an American ‘professional editor’. She disagreed with the use of English grammar conventions. Tough, honey. I am English Convent School educated. I use English grammar and English spelling. The second person has yet to respond to my request for clarification and specific examples. Watch this space.

To close, just a photo my son and his two cousins: one from the UK and one from Australia. A meeting 26 years in the making, but that’s fine.

Send your love through the mail …

It’s that time of year again! “What time of year?” I hear you ask. InCoWriMo is coming! Yes, you did hear an excited squeal.

This will be my third year of participation in InCoWriMo, the International Letter Writing Month. I don’t know when it started. The idea is that you attempt to average one handwritten letter per day for the month of February, so this year it will be 29 letters. There is a website, and an address book, from which you may select people, with similar or different interests to you. Letters don’t have to be long, because it is the effort that counts.

So why take part? Three reasons, so far. There may be more, so don’t hold me to that figure.

1. Mental health benefit: when my depression was keeping me chained to the house, as loud noise was a big problem for me, setting myself the target of ONE letter, or postcard per day was achievable. Then, once a week, I could also attempt the walk to the village Post Office to buy stamps. If that was too hard, I could ask my husband or son. But it was a start.

2. Stationery: Goddess! All that paper and stickers and coloured envelopes and crafty stuff like ribbons and snippets and … Yes, there was squealing involved again. Creating a thing takes a bit of time. That’s why I enjoy cooking, because it means I have found time to do it. So, being mindful, I think it is described now. A few minutes to write that postcard.

3. Pens and ink: as that top picture indicates, PENS! Not biros or rollerballs, but this is my chance to break out my fountain pen and ink collection. I love writing with a fountain pen. There is something incredibly soothing in the process. So what if I have ink on my hands?

The motto of InCoWriMo is “Send your love through the mail”. But what should one write and to whom? Here’s a list, courtesy of Goulet Pens:

That last one, a letter to a future self … write the letter and put it in a keepsake box. If you remember where you put it in your old age, drag the box out and read those letters.

Cookery Section

I tried the microwave mug cakes. They were not that bad. Apple crumble, which I shall make again tonight. Only needed nuking for 1.5 minutes.

Writing Stuff

A shout out to my baby sister, Annelise, who gifted me with a £40 voucher from Amazon. So far, in the name of research for other book ideas …

I will do this!

How did that line in “Record Breakers” go? “Dedication, dedication. Dedication, that’s all you need…”. Two Mondays into the year, and I am writing a blog post at 23.35 on Monday.

Life isn’t easy, that’s for sure, and when you want to publish a book that’s been sitting in draft format for a few years, it seems life can be nigh on impossible. The full time job pays the bills. That book seems as unreachable as the top shelf I was filling with new stock today. But, that’s the thing about goals. I will make it. Maybe it will be the end of 2020, but I will make it.

Writing Stuff …

This is the easy bit. I found this link today, which illustrated a point perfectly. Okay, allow for Henry Cavill being an actor, so his reading is acting. But he illustrates a point. I had to do it as a sales rep: paint a picture. Let your reader see in their mind’s eye what you, as the author, want them to see.

Cooking Stuff

Two things: new slow cooker and mug cakes. I shall be experimenting tomorrow. Results to follow next week.

Mental Health

Continuing on a theme. Please, ask for help. Message me on Facebook, if that’s the only way. Call the Samaritans. But, if you need help, please ask.

Dare to walk in my world?

Okay, not the snappiest title, but it is the strapline I have used for my book series from the outset. It also rings true as an unknown author. Will we be able to attract readers to our work? Do we go down the route of what is selling now, or do we dare to branch out and fulfil that dream?

Book Stuff

That was going to be one of the new sections in my blog. Begin at the beginning: what is my series all about? I have always been fascinated by legends, and with my parents living in Wales at the time, even more about Welsh legends. But if legends have a basis in truth, then could that truth still be relevant?

cwn-annwn-tattoo-copy-2Cwn Annwn Tattoo
(copyright Laura Smithers)

Therein lay the first of my stories: the legend of the Cwn Annwn. Understanding your legend was key, because it made the story possible. I have studied history, with mythology being a keen interest.

Could the Cwn Annwn still walk among us, I asked myself? I could but imagine the history they had witnessed.

When you take that into account, the story potential is endless. I have a notebook full of ideas for potential stories.

On that score, I am working on two books for this year. “Yr Ddraig Goch” is the follow-up to “Fane”, telling the story of what happens after Fane broke his pack away from the Sumerian Demon Queen, Lamashtu. The second book is “Cysgodion”. Those who have read the existing books, will know that there is an anomaly in the story of the character, Casimir Gosselin. “Cysgodion” will tell his story.

Cysgodion-Cover2

Writing Stuff

Let’s keep this simple. I am English. I went to a convent school, and was taught old-fashioned English Grammar. A recent review I had on one book suggested that after a good round of edits, the book might be worth 5*. It transpired that the reader’s perspective was skewed by … American-English grammar.

My advice is to decide which is more important: your target market or your integrity as an author? I can’t make myself write in so-called American-English and I am not going to try.

Cooking Stuff

I am willing to be led here. I am fortunate in that I work in a bookshop where we specialise in cookery, history and wellbeing books. Keto, Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood, vegan, vegetarian, Slimming World and health-oriented cooking: we have had them all.

I could share favourite recipes or discuss the pros and cons of different books, or even review a book. I have Type 2 diabetes and tend to eat lower carb, but I don’t eliminate them completely. So, make some suggestions in the comments.

Mental Health

The Black Dog. I have seen so many people comment that 2019 has been a bad year for them. A 13-month break in blogging, and virtually no output from a writing perspective. A gaslighting manager and training manager. The former retired earlier in the year. The latter is now a store manager with little chance to cause me a problem.

More importantly, during Mental Health Awareness week, my present employers launched resources to help people deal with mental health problems, absolutely invaluable when, in my local area, it can take 12 weeks to receive an appointment with the CBT counselling team.

Samaritans

The biggest step one can take is to ACKNOWLEDGE that you need help. There is no shame. Never say that you are weak. You have been strong for so long, and now it is time to sit down.

Until next time, my friends. I bid thee farewell on this last day of 2019. A glass of mead awaits me.
